DHS Student Places Third in State Poetry Competition

DHS student Cash Bourquin recently placed third in the Nevada Poetry Out Loud State Finals, held March 7 at the University of Nevada, Reno.

Cash earned the opportunity to compete at the state level after winning the Douglas Poetry Out Loud competition on Feb. 6. The school competition was held at Douglas High School and featured student recitations of selected poems.

Douglas High School finalists included:
• Cash Bourquin — First Place
• Violet Pierson — Second Place
• Nathan Bertucci — Third Place

After advancing as the school champion, Cash represented Douglas High School at the statewide competition, where students from across Nevada compete in the national Poetry Out Loud recitation program.

Cash is a 17-year-old filmmaker and actor who first became interested in acting after watching Pee-wee’s Big Adventure. Since then, he has taken on roles ranging from Prince Hamlet to Batman. It was while performing as Prince Hamlet that he developed a deeper appreciation for poetry and the art of recitation.

Cash says his favorite part of reading poetry is discovering the poet’s emotion and intent and bringing it to life through performance.

He credits the support of his parents, Camille and Cole Bourquin, middle school English teacher Elizabeth Leiknes, and Douglas High School drama teacher Anna Berbary.
